2/20-2/23 Weekend Happenings: Cheer-Up Charlie’s Reopening, Chili Cook-Offs, and more

From chili cook-offs to craft beer fest, this weekend is full of one food event after another. With so many good options, deciding what to do may just be the hardest decision you will make all week. But with the weather finally cooperating, that’s certainly not a bad problem to have. Even though the first ever Edible Austin Bacon & Beer Fest (mentioned here) is officially sold out, there are a number of alternatives to help you to start storing up for next winter this weekend.

The Young Texans Against Cancer (YTAC) will host its 4th Annual Spice for Life Chili Cook-off on Saturday. In addition to a chili competition with a couple dozen teams (ie plenty of tastings), the afternoon fundraiser will feature a live set by Austin’s own Shakey Graves. Spicewood Vineyards 6th Annual Chili Cookoff 2-5pm

And speaking of chili cook-offs, Spicewood Vineyards will host its 6th Annual Chili Cookoff on February 22nd. Throughout the afternoon 40 chili-making cheftestants will vie to see whose chili pairs best with Spicewoods Vineyards’ 2012 Cabernet Claret. To help you read between the lines, this means attendees will be forced to endure an afternoon of both chili AND wine tastings. It’s a tough job, but if you feel you can do it, grab your ticket ($20/per person) to the event here. More information about this event can be found here. 1419 Kromer Lane, Spicewood, TX

FoodTrailersAustin.com’s Mobile Food Throwdown – Draught House Pub

Two of Austin’s favorite food trailers Peached Tortilla and Chi’Lantro BBQ have a couple things in common. First, both trucks will soon open their first brick and mortar spots, and second, both specialize in highly addictive Asian fusion fare. But come this Saturday, it will be what divides them that counts as the two trucks go head to head in round 1 of FoodTrailersAustin.com’s Mobile Food Throwdown. Held at the Draught House, the event promises live music, games, beer, and most importantly, food tastings. Tickets are $28/per person and available here. More info about the event is available here.
