ACL 2013 Friday Top Picks + Song of the Day

Two back-to-back weekends of music means there are even more Austin City Limits Festival to enjoy this year. While the majority of big name artists will be performing both weekends, festival producers decided to shift around some of the daytime slots between weekends to give more smaller, up and coming artists a coveted lineup spot. Best of all, more local artists will be playing at the fest than ever before. This year’s festival seems to have more folk/country and indie/alt rock groups and less dupstep, electronic, and hip-hop than in years past. However, with 130-plus artists performing throughout the festival, there are plenty of fantastic bands for every musical taste.

Holly Roller – Thao & The Get Down Stay Down

Friday Top Picks

11:15 Wild Nothing – Samsung Galaxy Stage – Indie dream rock band Wild Nothing recently followed up their outstanding 2012 album Nocturne with yet another strong full EP this summer. A perfect, relaxing way to start the fest!

12:20PM Dana Falconberry – Austin Ventures – Local singer/songwriter Dana Falconberry striking vocals combined with a pop-folk sound make her a must see.

12:45PM – Windowspeak – Samsung Galaxy – The American western rock duo’s vintage inspired sound, anchored by singer Molly Hamilton’s melancholy vocals, makes Windowspeak a must-see for me.

1:30PM – Thao & the Get Down Stay Down – Bud Light – If you need a reason to get to ACL early on Friday, this is it. A SXSW 2013 favorite!

2:30PM – Shovels & Rope – Austin Ventures – This South Carolina duo somehow finds a way to play a dozen instruments, which translates into an energetic, fun country/rock set.

Holly Williams – BMI – Williams’ talents as a singer/songwriter are in her blood; Hank Jr.’s daughter is keeping the family legacy alive and well.

3:00PM – Smith Westerns – Honda – The festival favorite indie rock band Smith Westerns are back at ACL in support of another strong album.

4:00PM – fun. – AMD – The Queen-inspired fun. was a breakout artist of 2012. Should be a well, fun, set, but if the crowds are too much, there are two fantastic bands playing at 4:30PM.

4:30PM – Local Natives – Samsung Galaxy – One of my favorite bands at the 2011 festival is back with another album that showcases the group’s ability to harmonize with the best of them.

Blind Boys of Alabama – Zilker Tent – After supporting gospel and soul legends over the years, the BBA finally made their own southern soul solo album. Amazingly talented musicians!

5:00PM – Jake Bugg – Austin Ventures – English singer/songwriter Bugg has talents beyond his years.

5:30PM – The Black Angels – These local rockers are known for energizing sets filled with heart-pulsing sounds. Maybe a bit aggressive for 5:30PM..

6:00PM – Vampire Weekend – AMD – Preppy indie rock band always puts on a great set, and this year should be no exception.

6:15PM – Wild Belle – Austin Ventures – One of my favorite discoveries of last year’s ACL fest is back and on a bigger stage. Addictively fresh sound.

6:30PM – Arctic Monkeys – Samsung Galaxy – British indie rock group always delivers a theatrical, energetic set. Perfect for posting up for Muse.

8:00PM – Depeche Mode – AMD – Of the dueling headliners, I’m Depeche Mode. Though Muse always puts on one hell of a show, I’ve had the opportunity to see them recently, and I’ve never seen bucket list band Depeche Mode.

8:30PM – Muse – Samsung Galaxy – Always a solid headlining act!
