ACL 2013: Sunday Top Picks + Song of the Day

Two back-to-back weekends of music means there are even more Austin City Limits Festival to enjoy this year. While the majority of big name artists will be performing both weekends, festival producers decided to shift around some of the daytime slots between weekends to give more smaller, up and coming artists a coveted lineup spot. Best of all, more local artists will be playing at the fest than ever before. This year’s festival seems to have more folk/country and indie/alt rock groups and less dupstep, electronic, and hip-hop than in years past. However, with 130-plus artists performing throughout the festival, there are plenty of fantastic bands for every musical taste.

Sunday Top Picks below! Check out Friday’s Top Picks here. Check out Saturday’s Top Picks Here.

Austin EATS info here.

The Lone Bellow – You Never Need Nobody

11:15am – Bear Mountain – Bud Light – Sunday starts off strong with Canadian electro-pop group Bear Mountain. Great way to wake up for a full day of music.

12:20pm – Band of Heathens – Austin Ventures – Austin based Band of Heathens has remerged from a transitional period in 2012 revived and back on track.

Austin EATS break!

1:20pm – Roadkill Ghost Choir – Austin Ventures – Folk rock band RGC is a fun, upbeat band, and should be a great set.

1:30pm – MS MR – AMD – Mentioned here, MS MR is one of my favorite new bands of the year. Be sure to catch indie-pop duo MS MR.

2:00pm – Wild Feathers – BMI – Nashville band Wild Feathers is a classic Americana band a la The Altman Brothers. Hard not to get on board.

Dawes – Samsung Galaxy – Folk rock band Dawes is back with another standout album. Always a great festival act, Dawes is a perfect way to ease into Sunday at ACL.

2:30pm – Noah and the WhaleMentioned here, Noah and the Whale seemed poised to breakout after SXSW 2011, but instead have continued down a more slow and steady road to success. Their latest album is once again filled with lovely folk songs with a few electro-pop elements thrown in for good measure.

3:30pm – Grouplove – AMD – Mentioned here, Grouplove always delivers on stage. Though I wasn’t as taken by their most recent releases, Grouplove still makes for a fun, dance-filled set.

3:45pm – The Lone Bellow – Austin Ventures – Alt-country folk band The Lone Bellow’s heartfelt harmonies and mandolin-drenched songs make this up and coming band a show to catch this fest.

4:00pm – Franz Ferdinand – Samsung Galaxy – After an extended absence, Scottish indie rock band Franz Ferdinand made its long awaited return with the release of a fourth album this summer. The band’s punk/pop infused rock sound makes for a top pick set of the fest.

4:30pm – Divine Fits – Honda – Anchored by Spoon frontman Britt Daniel, indie rock band the Divine Fits’ 2012 album was filled polished garage rock songs with just the right amount of pop elements thrown in for good measure. Great band, great album, should be a great set.

5:00pm – Toro y Moi – Bud Light – Synth-pop/funk act Toro y Moi is never one to put on a boring set, and this ACL should be no different.

5:30pm – The National – AMD – A great festival band in general, The National is back after releasing an outstanding new album earlier this year. Should be a great set.

6:15pm – Phosphorescent – Austin VenturesMentioned here, Phosphorescent’s 2013 album Muchacho is layered with heartbreaking lyrics and unique arrangements. I am seeing him next Thursday, which is the only reason I will be staying at The National.

6:30pm – Tame Impala – Honda – Australian psyche-rock band Tame Impala’s 2012 EP Lonerism was one of my favorite albums of last year. Can’t wait to finally see them live!

7:00pm – Phoenix – Bud Light – French indie-pop group Phoenix is back with a second album that displays a more evolved, deeper side. Hard decision, but with a time slot that overlaps with several other must-see bands, this might be one to miss.

7:30pm – Neko Case – Austin Ventures – Solo or with The New Pornographers, Neko Case’s her throaty vocals and striking songwriting abilities make her one of the most talented artists around.

8:30pm – Lionel Richie – Samsung Galaxy – One of the very best, Lionel, will be a wonderful close to a great weekend.
