Friday Picks Here

Saturday Picks Here

11:30 AM The Features – Honda Stage:

12:20 PM Kopecky Family Band – Austin Ventures Stage:

1:15 PM Stars – Barton Springs Stage:

2:15 PM Gary Clark, Jr. – AMD Stage: After playing the festival for years, Gary Clark, Jr. has seen his career blossom from for hometown hero to national acclaim. With his guitar in hand, Clark, Jr.’s ACL performances never disappoint, and this year will certainly be no different.

3:15 PM Tough call as two of my favorites, Polica and Tennis, both take the stage at 3:15…

ACL Saturday Picks

11:15 AM Nikki Lane – BMI:  Though she plays early, let Nikki Lane’s pop infused country twang be your motivation to get to the fest early.

11:45 AM Caveman – Honda Stage: With a Peter Sarsgaard directed video

12:30 PM Dev – AMD Stage: Electropop/House jazz artist Dev isn’t my preferred flavor of music, but her music will certainly energize crowds for a full day of music.

1:00 PM Wheeler BrothersAustin Ventures Stage: Though aiming to arrive earlier, the realist in me predicts Austin’s very own Wheeler Brothers will be my first show of the day. The Wheeler Brothers’ Texas county/rock style consistently sells out local shows and should translate into a great set at the festival.

1:15 PM – Should you decide to depart the Wheeler Brothers early, deciding where to go next leads to the first tough decision of the day between Bombay Bicycle Club and Zola Jesus.

1:15 PM Bombay Bicycle Club – Barton Springs Stage: BBC wins this battle for me as I have not seen the English indie rockers live yet.

1:15 PM Zola Jesus – Honda Stage: Experimental poster Zola Jesus is known for her bold delivery of intense and haunting lyrics juxtaposed against a lo-fi instrumental backing. Though the smaller Honda stage is an ideal setting, her talent might have a hard time translating at an early time slot.

2:00 PM: Three great acts take the stage at 2PM. Where you’ll find me is TBD as of now, leaning towards the Whigs.

2:00 PM Rufus Wainwright – Bud Light Stage: Rufus Wainwright’s beautiful compositions, interesting vocals, and songwriting abilities will deliver a wonderful live performance.

2:00 PM Dry the River – Austin Ventures: Since going momentum during SXSW a few years back, British folk rockers have toured extensively and return to Austin even more polished and lovely than before.

2:00 PM The Whigs – AMD: The Athens, GA garage rock band are simply just a great live band and a surefire pick.

3:00 PM Oberhofer – Barton Springs: Indie rock/dance punk band Oberhofer are a new act for me, and one I can’t wait to experience live.

ACL Friday Top Picks

As usual, the most difficult part of Austin City Limits is deciding between all the amazing musical options every hour of the day. To help make your decisions a bit easier, Ginny’s Austin will be breaking down the top picks and recommendations for each day. Here are Friday’s picks! Who are you looking forward to seeing?

Austin City Limits for Friday, October 12
11:45 AM He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister – Barton Springs Stage: Mentioned here, this tap dancing, kick drum playing band’s soulful beats and injections of western swing regularly inspire crowds to break out in dance. Perfect way to start the festival off on a high note!

Austin EATS Break!

2:30 PM Tough head to head right off the bat with LP versus the War on Drugs.Since I caught the fantastic War on Drugs during SXSW, L.P. wins this match up.
L.P. – Austin Ventures Stage: After penning hits for many a chart topping pop star, L.P.’s debut album has finally launched her Into the WildHer powerful songwriting ability combined with her captivating vocals will be a set to remember.
War on Drugs – Bud Light Stage: Fans of Americana songwriting greats like Bob Dylan and Tom Petty will fall head over heels for indie rockers the War on Drugs. Should be a great set! Continue reading ACL Friday Top Picks

Austin EATS

One of the highlights of Austin City Limits is choosing where to overeat from the amazing selection of vendors at Austin Eats. Unlike yours truly, most attendees probably haven’t spent too much time trolling the ACL website reading menus. From what I have deduced, there are plenty of options to feed any craving, so I recommend arriving hungry and penciling in a few return trips to the Austin Eats area. Here are a few recommendations of places I can’t wait to try this weekend:

ACL Mornings: KGSR & KUT Live Broadcasts

Whether you’re attending the Austin City Limits Festival or just looking to catch some of the action, one of the best ways to start the day is by attending a live morning broadcast hosted by KGSR and KUT.

KUT will be taking over the Four Seasons Austin lawn Friday morning to broadcast live performances by some of the festival’s rising stars. With a suggested $10 donation to the Seton Shivers Foundation, enjoy breakfast tacos and coffee while taking in live performances from artists including local favorite Quiet Company.

Similar to years past, KGSR will also be expanding your chances to catch great music throughout ACL weekend. Join KGSR during their Live at Threadgill’s broadcast Friday and Saturday morning to catch Ginny’s Austin top picks such as LP, Ben Howard, and The Whigs. A $5 donation to the Seton Shivers Foundation grants you access to live sets and interviews as well as coffee and a free taco for the first 100 guests. There will also be $3 Bud Retros and $6.75 Crown Royal Kickstarters. (Pace yourself festival goers!)

ACL Band of the Day: Wild Belle

Sibling duo Wild Belle may be the new kids on the ACL block, but you would not know it after listening to their unique and addictive beats. Natalie Bergman’s soulful vocals, backed by Elliot Bergman’s sax and keys, show versatility by shifting from moments of blissful, ethereal space-pop to richer ska/reggae beats. Though Wild Belle’s catalog of music is small, each song is unexpected and infectious.

As misfortune would have it, Wild Belle plays at the same time as another sibling duo, Tegan and Sara. The multi-instrument playing Canadian sisters Tegan and Sara are one Friday’s biggest acts, but . . . → Read More: ACL Band of the Day: Wild Belle
