Charitable Happenings: Benefits Planned for Esme Barrera

By now you have most likely heard about the terribly tragic murder of Esme Barrera and the related attacks. Shock and outrage over her passing is at the forefront conversation this week, especially in light of so many unanswered questions about the events surrounding her attack. As our community reels from her tragic passing, one thing is clear; Esme’s young life touched everyone who knew her and now through their reflections on her life, Austinites who didn’t get the chance. An avid music lover, Esme was a fixture at shows around town, and her absence has been palpable at this week’s Austin Free Week shows. Altruistic in spirit, Esme worked each summer at Girls Rock Camp which serves to empower girls of all backgrounds and abilities through musical education and performance.

Just as Esme gave so much to those around her, her friends have come together to help Esme’s family prepare for her memorial. To make a donation to the For Our Esme B Fund, please go here. Additionally, there are a few events shaping up around town to raise funds in honor of Esme. Austinist has a great list here, including two Brooklyn benefits, but listed below are a couple to check out. Another suggestion to honor Esme would be to make a donation to Girls Rock Camp in her honor.

The Scoot Inn is hosting a tribute on January 12 featuring Follow that Bird, Dead Space, Love Collector, and more. The show begins at 7pm. $5-$10 donations are suggested. More details here.

Club 1808 is hosting a tribute night on January 13 featuring Crooked Bangs, Gospel and the Wolf, Cruddy and more from 5pm-2am. $5-$10 donations are recommended. There is a silent auction as well, and donations are appreciated! More details here.

Beerland is hosting a benefit night on Saturday, January 28 featuring Ted Leo, the Crack Pipes, The Golden Boys, and Greg Enlow. The shows kick off at 8pm. More info here.
