Concert of the Week: Fiona Apple Tickets on sale Friday

I learned a little something this past SXSW: Fiona Apple was apparently the teenage daydream of every one of my male friends. While discussing the impossibility of catching her ‘secret’ Stubb’s show, the conversation quickly turned confessional with many admitting the flame ignited by her 1997 Criminal video still burned bright. This fascination likely had much to do with that provocative music video, but it is still easy to understand the draw.

Like many, I also became captivated with Fiona Apple after her debut album Tidal. Her mysterious and off-kilter persona was a refreshing dark spot against pop machines like Backstreet Boys, Hanson, and Spice Girls. Her harrowing lyrics, complicated arrangements, and spellbinding voice have made her hard to forget over the years, despite long gaps between album releases. 90 word album titles take time to develop, you know? After seven long awaited years, Fiona Apple has a new album out and a bevy of new tour dates, including a stop in Austin this fall. Her latest album, released June 19, is fantastic. The Idle Wheel is Wiser…* features a grown up, less melancholy Apple. Most tracks are supported by only a soft drum beat or piano, allowing her emotional and powerful vocals to shine through.

Catch Fiona Apple in Austin on September 20 at the Austin City Limits Moody Theatre. Tickets go on sale this Friday, June 22 at 10am. More details are available here.
