Where to Drink Next: Austin’s Newest Watering Holes

If you happen to be on the hunt for a new watering hole or perhaps a place to drown your sorrows following the closing of Mexican restaurant/music venue/heroin hotspot Jovita’s, here is a rundown of a few new bars around town. Some are new, others are newish, but all are worth checking out!

East Side

Brooklyn transplant Weather Up is now open in East Austin. The bar is the third of its kind from owner and famed mixologist Kathryn Weatherup and features an extensive menu of craft cocktails. Believing a cocktail is only as good as its ice, Weather Up uses a 300 pound Clineball machine to create the perfect cube. The new bar offers over 100 cocktails using six different types of spirits and shapes of ice. Plans for an expanded food menu are in the works, but for now, enjoy bar snack such as cheese & charcuterie plates, oysters, and more.

Weather Up is located at 1808 East Cesar Chavez Street, Austin, Texas 78702. The bar is open Tuesday through Thursday 4 p.m.-12 a.m. and Friday through Saturday 4 p.m.-1 a.m.

White Horse Austin, mentioned here, is one of my favorite bars in town, and judging by the nightly crowds, many agree with this opinion. The East Side bar draws quite an eclectic crowd of folks looking to go just a little bit country. There is always fantastic music inside and great tacos via Bomb Tacos outback. White Horse  is Donn’s Depot (minus the lonely hearts club) meets East Austin, which makes for a perfect combination.

White Horse Austin is located at 500 Comal Street, Austin, TX 78702 and open daily from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m.

In a shock to no one, Johnny Law finally shut down 6th Street’s infamous Midnight Cowboy Oriental Massage Parlor slash brothel not so long ago. Now revamped and reopened by the Alamo Drafthouse family, Midnight Cowboy Modeling specializes in a different kind of happy ending. The Speakeasy-style bar offers mixologist crafted cocktails, plush surroundings, and a cell phone free atmosphere. The reservations-only bar is still exclusive and mysterious, but now operates on the right side of the law. For reservations, go here.

Midnight Cowboy Modeling is located at 313 E 6th Street, Austin, TX 78701 and open Tuesday through Saturday 6 p.m. to close.

Red Room Lounge, Downtown’s latest wine bar, was created by Austin’s Wines.com in conjunction with Sommelier Bill Elsey. Whether drinking in or taking home, the new lounge strives to pour interesting and hard to find varietals to please connoisseurs and novices alike. For wine lovers, Red Room is a welcome breath of fresh air since most new drinkeries are all about craft beers and fancy cocktails these days. Stay up to date on the latest offerings via Red Room Lounge’s Facebook page.

The Red Room Lounge, 306 E. Third St., Austin, TX, 78701 and is open ‘most days and nights’.

Handlebar, inspired by the always controversial male facial hair, is a multistory fun house located downtown. The bottom floor bar plays homage to the man who put the ‘stache in mustache, Tom Selleck. Venture upstairs to enjoy a grown up kiddie park complete with rocking horses and giant jenga.

Handlebar is located at 121 East 5th Street, Austin, Texas 78701. Open daily from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.

North Loop’s ever growing list of hotspots now includes Drink. Well. The new bar features beer, wine, and cocktails, with a large emphasis on the craft beer selection. For the traditionalist, the menu also includes cheap $2.50 domestics. Food options include Southern-inspired bar fare such as crawdaddy & grit cakes, ‘crack’ n cheese (mac ‘n cheese w/bacon and cracklings), and hot wings.

Drink. Well is located at 207 East 53rd Street, Austin, Texas 78751 and open every day except Wednesday from 4-11p.m.

Designed to be a post-work neighborhood destination, Workhorse strives to capture that dive bar appeal with cheap drinks and a hard to find location. The bar keeps it local with its beer offerings and jukebox. The food menu keeps it simple by offering burgers and fried snacks.

Workhorse is located at 100 E North Loop Blvd Ste B, Austin TX 78751 and open daily from 11-12 a.m.
