First Look: Whole Foods Domain

A few exclusive Domain store goodies…

A few exclusive Domain store goodies…

Whole Foods officially opened the doors at its newest store location at the Domain in North Austin this morning! Here are the details of the new store I gathered during a sneak peek around Whole Foods Domain as the crew finished the build out last week.

In planning for the new location, Whole Foods expanded on some of the most popular components of other stores as well as worked with neighbors in the area to incorporate new offerings based on their feedback. It is also clear in walking through the store that this location was designed to be a community gathering place rather than just a grocery store.

From the produce containers to the wheelbarrow module created by Roadhouse Relics, Whole Foods used repurpused materials as much as possible. Like all of its locations, Whole Foods Domain will feature ample selections of local products, but the team is going the extra mile to highlight these partnerships with details such as increased signage to offering products exclusive to this location.

In scouting this location, Whole Foods found there was a gap in the number of fast casual/grab ‘n go dining spots in the area. Based on this feedback, catering to this need became an essential component of the new store. For example, the coffee bar has been amped up to include hand pulled espresso drinks and a state of the art slow brewing system designed to produce killer cold brew coffee.

In addition to the aforementioned Draft Shack, Whole Foods Domain will offer a number of dine in options ranging from pizza to ramen. Whole Foods Domain has ample seating both upstairs and downstairs, and as an added bonus, team members will be roving the upstairs area with kegs in case anyone needs a top off of beer.

Popular store features Whole Foods made sure to expand were meat and seafood markets as well as its baked goods offerings. As with other area locations, the meat counter will specialize in high quality, house aged meat selections, but the Domain Whole Foods will be the only shop with an 8-foot case of housemade jerky and bacon.

Seafood offerings include a ‘You Shuck ‘Em’ East coast oyster bar in addition to an expanded selection of market options. Speaking of oysters, a surefire store favorite will undoubtedly be the Draft Shack, a beer, wine and oyster bar located in the center of the store. In addition to offering a plethora of craft beers on tap, the Draft Shack will also offer daily happy hour specials on drinks and woodfire grilled oysters.

The bakery will of course have a large selection of freshly baked breads and desserts found in other stores, but this location ups the ante with a few additional items. At long last, Whole Foods will finally offer freshly baked tortillas daily! In addition, there will be fresh bialys (similar to a flat bagel) as well as a daily cookie selection available for purchase by the pound (and half cookie for those indulging in moderation).

For those looking to finally kickstart that New Year’s resolution, the Domain store will have not one, but two nutrition specialist on staff leading regular healthy cooking discussions. The Whole Body area is also expanded to include more lifestyle and clothing options. In addition, the juice bar feature is actually located within the section to better help guide customers on which supplements they should add to their juice orders based on their needs. Pro tip: Both specialists are also available to help you shop and meal plan. Check with guest services for more details.

After touring the store, it was a toss up about which area I was most excited about: the Draft Shack or the coffee bar. However, the final stop on the tour took us outside to check out the store’s highlight, a beer and bratwurst garden complete with a stage for live music.

Though a bit of a trek for this South Austinite, I left with serious grocery store envy for my North Austin friends. Looks like I may have to start commuting to grocery shopping…
