Friday Faves: 4th of July Edition

One day early and not a second too soon: In honor of the good ‘ole U.S. of A., we’re going All-American for this week’s Friday Faves.

Dish of the Day: Frank Hotdog

Drink of the Week: Twisted X Brewing Company Fuego Jalapeno Pilsner

Here’s a little 4th of July trivia for you: Americans eat on average 150 million hotdogs every Independence Day (#murica), and that’s not even counting the total tally from the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Chances are you’ll be grilling said eats over a hot open flame. This of course requires a cold beer in hand, which leads to today’s Drink of the Week.

With all of the Texas craft beers on the market, it was only a matter of time until someone brewed up a beer meant to go hand in hand with grilling. Enter Twisted X Brewing Company’s Jalapeno Pilsner, the appropriately named Fuego. Though infused beers often sound good in theory, it’s something that can often result in more kitch than quality. This, however, is not the case for the Tex-Mex brewery’s pepper infused brew. It’s a crisp, refreshing pilsner with subtle heat to keep things interesting, especially when enjoyed alongside some grilled meat.

38th Annual Austin Symphony H-E-B July 4th Concert & Fireworks

Austin’s annual firework display has relocated this year from Auditorium Shores to the Circuit of the Americas, which is a bit of a bummer. On the plus side, organizers are promising a larger than life display as the facilities can better accommodate such events. Attendees are welcome to join in on the 4th of July fun beginning at 4PM on Friday. At 8:30pm, the Austin Symphony Orchestra will perform in advance of the fireworks display at 9:30pm. Details can be found here.

Hops + Grain 4th of July Shindig

Join local brewery Hops + Grain for a little daytime action on the 4th of July. The Hops + Grain Independence Day bash will be a beer-soaked afternoon of fun and the perfect way to warm up for the night’s fireworks. Tickets to the event, available here, are $25 with proceeds benefiting 1400 Miles, an organization focused on prostate cancer prevention. Details here.

Black Sheep Lodge’s Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest

Speaking of hot dog eating contest, Black Sheep Lodge is hosting its annual man versus dog challenge at 2:30pm on Friday. Competitors in the annual eating contest will try and take down as many hotdogs as possible for the chance to win $250 and this year’s title. Entry is $20 with proceeds benefiting Austin Pets Alive. Details here.

Dish of the Day: Chili Cheese Dog from Frank Restaurant

And finally, if this post has taught you nothing, it’s that hotdogs are the official food of the 4th of July. Hence, it’s only fitting today’s dish of the day is a hotdog with all the right fixings from downtown’s Frank Restaurant, photo above. Wash it down with a cold beer and a side of antacids for a lunch of champions.

Bonus Favorite Link of the Week

Though I’m strongly Team Clickhole over Buzzfeed any day of the week, I can’t argue with any mashup involving Ron Swanson.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July!
