Friday Faves: Summer Beers, Tiki Tuesdays, and More

Hops & Grain

Hops & Grain

From summer brews to Team USA here are five things I am loving this week:

Summer Beers: Hops & Grain’s The One Called Zoe

I’m a red wine girl through and through, but when Austin’s hot summer months demand something a bit lighter, I find myself trading glasses of cab for cans of beer more often than not. Thankfully, Austin’s craft beer scene has plenty of stellar options to appease both beer snobs and fair-weather fans alike. One such brew I am particularly enjoying these days is Hops & Grain’s The One Called Zoe.

A perfect summer beer, Zoe is an easy drinking, smooth finishing pale lager with plenty of complexity and flavor to keep things interesting. Its heavier malt flavors are offset by hops that embrace those classic summertime flavors of citrus and fresh cut grass. Perhaps a little too heavy to drink all day long, but it’s a food friendly brew that’s ideal for dining al fresco.

Tiki Tuesdays at Hotel San Jose

Happening now through June 30, the annual Texas Tiki Week is a rum-filled celebration of all things Tiki thrown by the US Bartender’s Guild. Throughout the week, cocktail bars around town including Drink. Well., Contigo, Peche, and more get their luau on by featuring a menu of classic Tiki cocktails. (More details here)

Clearly fans of coconut bras and grass skirts, Hotel San Jose has decided one week of Tiki is just not enough. As such, Hotel San Jose will be hosting Tiki Tuesdays every week through July from 5pm to midnight. In addition to tropical cocktails, the South Congress hotel and bar will feature surf rock band The Avocados and plenty of relaxed fun on the back patio. Details here.

‘Murica: Team USA Advances + 4th of July Kickoff

Due to FIFA’s World Cup rules, which #IBELIEVE make the BCS system look simple, Team USA is advancing to the next round of the World Cup playoffs despite losing to Germany on Thursday. Get your red, white and blue ready because our next game is perfectly set for next Friday, which of course is the 4th of July.

But with so much to celebrate, why wait until next week when you can start this Saturday?

Head to the Hill Country Galleria Independence Day Festival this Saturday beginning at 4pm to enjoy live music, BBQ, carnival ride, and not one, but two firework shows. More details can be found here.

On-Airstreaming’s Local Artist Spotlight

The locally based music production company On-Airstreaming helps take fans up close and personal with one of Austin’s most prolific rising musicians, Shakey Graves, without leaving their seats. Filmed in On-Airstreaming’s downtown airstream, the three part video series showcases two performances and an in-depth interview with Shakey Graves for your viewing pleasure. In addition to this recently released feature, the website also has a backlog of interviews and performances from favorite bands like Tokyo Police Club, Band of Skulls, and Cold War Kids to help provide a perfect soundtrack for your Friday afternoon.

A Love Letter to ATX

As if folks needed any additional incentive to move to our fair city, this guy went ahead and created an amazing three minute time lapsed video capturing the beauty of Austin. Check out Anthony Takano’s love letter to the city of Austin via his video “Riding the Light.”
