Police arrested 15 people on federal drug charges this morning, including  Amanda and Amado Pardo, owners of South Austin music venue and Mexican food restaurant Jovita’s.

Like many South Austinites, I have long speculated how the always empty venue stays afloat considering its large square footage and prime location. Apparently, Jovita’s owners were followers of the Yassine Business Model

According to the Austin American Statesman, the arrests stem from a yearlong investigation into a heroin distribution ring with ties to the Texas Syndicate prison gang. In an indictment filed by the US Attorney’s office, officials accuse Amado Pardo of spearheading the drug ring.

Beginning at 5:30 a.m., authorities raided Jovita’s located at 1615 S. First St. and two neighboring properties at 404 and 406 Milton Street. Federal officials are seeking to seize the Pardo owned properties, including Jovita’s, alleging the restaurant and houses served as base of the drug operations.

The investigation, named ‘Operation Muerte Negra’, alleges Pardo & Co. saw thousands of dollars in daily sales. View a gallery of those arrested here.
