January Weekend Foodie Happenings

More events for next week and February to come, but in the meantime, here a few weekend quick hits to check out while enjoying this unseasonably warm weather!

The Scrumptious Chef RL Reeves, Jr. will back on his quest to take Austin by storm one pop-up at a time come February, but in the meantime there are two one night only culinary events to take advantage of this weekend.

First is a two-night Texas Comfort themed dinner event held at East Austin’s Swoop House by Supper Friends. The featured chef of the evening is Eric Nelson Brown of the Ritz Carlton, so expect gussied up menu of Texas favorites. Taking place this Friday and Saturday night beginning at 7PM, the event is BYOB and cost is $60/pp. More information is available here.

Next up is Saturday night’s Peruvian Pop-up hosted by Tamale House East. The Tex-Mex hotspot is headed a little farther South to create a multi-course feast inspired by food from the (T.H.E. owners) fatherland. Escape to Peru beginning at 7PM on Saturday evening. Each course will cost between $6-$25 with beer & wine available as well. More information here.

Saturday, January 26 is the 7th Annual Chili Cook-off on from 12-3pm. In addition to a chili showdown, this year’s event will also include a two-stepping dance competition set to live music by Jeff Hughes & Chapparal. Entry fees for the dance competition and chili cook-off are $10 and $20 respectively, with proceeds benefiting People’s Community Clinic which is the only area clinic dedicated to providing health and wellness to the uninsured. Jo’s is located at South Congress, Austin TX 78704.

Somms Under Fire returns to The Driskill on Sunday, January 27 for a one-night celebrating wine with a little competitive fun. Attendees at Sunday’s event will enjoy small bites and wine as they watch three top sommeliers duel it out to see which one reigns supreme. As an added bonus, the Keeper Collection has teamed up with the Wine & Food Foundation of Texas to help guests unlock the secret to building the ‘Perfect Pairing’. Because, let’s face it, when it comes creating a perfect meal at home or eating out, there are few tasks more daunting than picking the right wine.

Somm’s Under Fire takes place at The Driskill Hotel on Sunday, January 27 beginning at 5PM for VIP and 6PM GA. Tickets for the event are $55 (GA)/$100 (VIP) and available for purchase here. More information can be found here.
