Lucy’s Fried Chicken

Chef James Holmes, the lauded force behind high-end Olivia, took a decidedly more relaxed approach with sister spot Lucy’s Fried Chicken. The laid back, ‘come as you are’ restaurant is the type of place made for a casual meal with friends.

Along with fried chicken, the restaurant’s menu is rich in Southern tradition reflected through comforting dishes such as fried deviled eggs, collard greens, chicken boudin, and sweet potato pie. The Lone Star State’s influence shines through in the lighter dishes such as wood fire grilled oysters and Texas caviar and Lucy’s all Texas beer list.

Lucy’s Fried Chicken – Austin Oysters – $13.00

We began with an order of the ‘Austin’ oysters consisting of six wood fire grilled oysters dressed with tequila, lime, chili sauce and cojita cheese. The oysters were well seasoned and heartier than expected, thanks to the cheese. While they were a solidly good dish, the oysters weren’t as juicy as hoped for, though personal preference might have played a role in my assessment. Not to be a traitor to my Gulf Coast roots, but I am less partial to Texas oysters as compared to other areas.

Next up, an order of fried chicken. Prior to opening the South Congress eatery, Chef Holmes’ buckets of crispy fried goodness were an Austin Eats favorite among hungry ACL attendees. Fans from the fest certainly won’t be disappointed with the fried chicken hailing from kitchen. The chicken has just the right amount of breading to give it a crispy, crunchy shell. The meat is juicy and flavorful without being overly greasy. It is a straightforward rendition of a classic dish that will please any fried chicken connoisseur. Paired with any one of Lucy’s terrific sides such as the crab-boil potato salad or corn on the cob, its hard not to walk away in a blissful food coma.
