River City Market

Travis Heights new gourmet grab ‘n go, River City Market, is a very welcome addition to the South Austin neighborhood. Since opening at the tail end of last year, both the market’s grocery selection and menu offerings have quickly grown to now include a broader range of needs. And though the phrases ‘South Congress’ and ‘quick and easy’ don’t normally go hand in hand, the market benefits from being positioned just a hair past the heart of SoCo and all its parking nightmares, but still close enough to keep from feeling out of the way.

In addition to a prepared foods case, the market offers build-your-own breakfast tacos every morning until 11 in addition to a sandwich menu with about a dozen options. The grocery selection includes organic household necessities, speciality foods, beer/wine, and pantry items. Of note, the beer selection is impressively large beer and includes both craft and domestic varieties, including plenty of local brews.

There is also a small but diverse selection of wines with varietals from almost every region priced around $20 and below. The aisles are lined with snacks such as crackers, chips and salsa, ingredients for pasta dishes, and other gourmet treats. Again, there is a strong presence of local and regional goods such as quail sausage, jams, and more. Of course, this convenience comes at a price tag higher than nearby HEB or 7-11, so be sure to check the sticker before you end up with $10 dishwasher detergent. From my first preholiday visit until my most recent, the various offerings have grown significantly to include perishable items such as milk and cheese, and I imagine this trend will continue going forward.

While picking up a bottle of wine from RCM, I couldn’t resist the temptation to pick up a couple macaroons. Supplied by local purveyor LaLeigh, these macaroons were some of the best I have tasted in town. The outside was light and pillowy while the middle was creamy and full of flavor. For me, the real test of a delicious macaroon is if it actually taste like the flavor it advertises itself to be. Both LaLeigh’s bourbon vanilla and tiramisu passed that test with flying colors.
