While you are out and about celebrating Mother Earth this weekend, don’t forget it is also International Record Store Day! In honor of all things vinyl, today’s song of the day comes off a record purchased during my most recent foray to End of an Ear on South First Street. A few listens of ‘Friends of Friends’ from Hospitality’s self-titled debut album and it’s easy to get hooked on the NYC trio. The album is filled with tracks detailing the trials, tribulations, and quarter life crises of a twentysomething life. But Hospitality doesn’t wallow; lead vocals/guitarist Amber Papini’s upbeat, . . . → Read More: International Record Store Day + Hospitality
The Austinist is taking over Mohawk next week to throw what will be the most fun bash of the week! Full disclosure, as a contributor, I am slightly biased, but it really will be a blast. Taking place Wednesday, March 14 from noon to 6pm, the Austin or Bust Party features a lineup of bands including Chairlift, Husky, Clock Opera, and many more. There is NO RSVP!!! so come one, come all. Special guest announcement to come soon. See you there.
Today’s Song of the Day is ‘Love, Love, Love’ by Avalanche City. Avalanche City is the solo project of New Zealand native Dave Baxter. His debut release Our New Life Above the Ground is a folksy album recorded during a period of self-isolation (hey, it worked for Bon Iver). While the album is a solo project, Avalanche City is performed by a group of musician playing a wide range of instruments including a ukulele, manjo, and percussions. His songs reflect this melancholy but there is a sense of overlying hopefulness on tracks such as ‘You and I’ and ‘Drive’. Its easy listening and catchy, perfect day party music, which coincidentally is when you can catch them during SXSW. Avalanche City will perform at The Warner Sound Day Party on Wednesday, March 14. They will join Geographer, The Chain Gang of 1974, and personal favorite fun. (single also below). Full daily line-ups of The Warner Sound Parties presented by Nikon after the jump!

This music pick of the day is DC-based band Deleted Scenes. The quarlet heads to Austin on January 30 in support of their sophomore album Young People’s Church of the Air, a record that should be listened to on repeat. Deleted Scenes slightly chaotic sound jumps all over the map throughout the album, from the lo-fi, easy going Cali-rock ‘The Days of Adderall’ to the 80s-influenced ‘Burglarizing the Deaf’ to the experimental rock ‘The Demon and the Hurricane.’ It shouldn’t work, but somehow it does. Heady, dark, noisy numbers are followed by rhythmic, harmonious upbeat tracks and brought back . . . → Read More: Song of the Day + Concert News: Deleted Scenes
Today’s Song of the Day slash Concert Pick of the Week is Starfucker (STRFKR)’s Medicine. The Portland, Oregon band heads to the Mohawk this Saturday, January 14 and I highly recommend checking them out. STRFKR recently released a remastered version of 2009’s Jupiter EP. The highly infectious electronic/pop album includes old favorites like ‘Biggie Smalls’ and ‘Boy Toy’ as well as three additional songs. Unlike some electronic music, STRFKR is a band you actually want to listen to beyond a live show. Soft lyrics and a mellow electronic sound make STRFKR’s music easy listening but the beats are catchy . . . → Read More: Music Happenings: Song of the Day + Concert of the Week
By now you have most likely heard about the terribly tragic murder of Esme Barrera and the related attacks. Shock and outrage over her passing is at the forefront conversation this week, especially in light of so many unanswered questions about the events surrounding her attack. As our community reels from her tragic passing, one thing is clear; Esme’s young life touched everyone who knew her and now through their reflections on her life, Austinites who didn’t get the chance. To read more about Esme from those who knew her, go here and here. An avid music lover, Esme . . . → Read More: Charitable Happenings: Benefits Planned for Esme Barrera
