Halloween Weekend Happenings

Happy Halloween everyone! If you are looking for some fun Halloween events happening around town this weekend, search no further. While the most frightening event taking place this weekend will be taking place at Texas Memorial Stadium where the wayward Texas Longhorns take on the ranked Baylor Bears, a few less demoralizing, fun events to share with you are listed below.

Over at Stubb’s you can join the instrumental electronic 5 member band of Soundtribe Sector 9 (STS9) in what is sure a dance party filled two nights of shows and fairy wings galore. I have experienced a STS9 . . . → Read More: Halloween Weekend Happenings

Weekend Happenings: Light the Night Walk!

This weekend the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is putting on a great event I wanted to share with you. Chances are you or someone you know has been affected by a blood cancer as these diseases know no age, race or social group. Funding for research is more important now than ever, and you can help do your part by participating in a great walk on Saturday evening. The ‘Light up the Night’ walk will take place at Lake Park at Mueller, and participants will carry illuminated balloons to show support for this great cause. What a perfect way . . . → Read More: Weekend Happenings: Light the Night Walk!

Homeslice Pizza

One of my favorite South Congress gems is everyone’s favorite pizza parlor Homeslice. Homeslice is one of those places that no matter when you go there is always a wait, but it is worth it. Monday evening, nothing sounded better to me than a salad and pizza to cure my post weekend blues, and sure enough one minute inside the eclectic, aromatic restaurant I felt better already. In a city filled with low-end trailers and high-end boutique restaurants Homeslice perfectly fills that middle ground spot I think Austin is missing; it’s casual and down to earth, but still makes for a fun dinner before going out or a nice spot to take a date. It has a small, but well executed wine list where the selections change regularly and the prices don’t spring above $8 at the very most. The food is outstanding, and not only is Homeslice committed to putting out the best New York City style pizza in Austin, the owners put their money where their mouth is by taking the staff on yearly trips to the Big Apple to learn new techniques and make sure the Homeslice pizza is as authentic as possible. Truth be told, the best thing about Homeslice in my opinion isn’t the pizza, it’s the Greek salad. With Homeslice’s salads you have the option to order in three different sizes (1/2 portion, whole, family style), and since the ½ portion is very generous you can save your wallet and appétit by ordering the smaller version. The best part about the salad isn’t just the sizable amount of vegetables and homemade dressing; it is all about the garlic knots that accompany the order. These little pieces of heaven are freshly baked in the special knot oven, and try as I might, I have never been able to walk away from a Homeslice meal without at least one. On Monday evening, my tablemate, who apparently likes to live dangerously, stole half my knot, and fingers were only spared due to my post-ACL lethargy because really, they are that good. Thankfully, our sausage, ricotta, and bell pepper pizza arrived just in time. The perfectly cooked, generously topped pizza pie hit the spot immediately. Occasionally I have found Homeslice’s crust to be slightly well done, but tonight it was only slightly crisp on the bottom from the grille to provide an extra crunch, but still chewy and soft, which is exactly what I prefer. Portions are huge so a medium is a great size to share. I have a hard time with Homeslice leftovers because the wood oven grilled pizza doesn’t make for the best cold pizza (my favorite) and the crust gets a little tough in reheating, so I try my hardest not to leave any on the plate, but it has yet to work. Still, Homeslice pizza fresh or a day later is still much, much better than most so I can’t complain! And, now that More Homeslice is open for take-out and delivery next door, it is even easier to enjoy this New York City-style pizza.

Taverna

Continuing with October’s celebration of all things pizza, another great pizza in town is from Taverna in the 2nd Street district. To be honest, I am not wild about Taverna other than their weekend brunch (hello $1 mimosas!) but the pizza is very, very good AND they have a happy hour. Taverna is one of those places where the food is always solidly good, but just missing that secret sauce that separates the men from the boys in my humble opinion. That being said, the buffalo mozzarella, arugula, and tomato pizza is my favorite thing on the menu. I . . . → Read More: Taverna

Enoteca

As I previously mentioned, October is my second favorite month of the year, and one of the many reasons for this is that October is National Pizza Month. Probably because pizza in and of itself encompasses the flavors and ingredients I love most like bread, cheese, and tomatoes, I am a total and complete pizza snob. I cringe at the idea of eating fast food pizzas like Domino’s or Papa John’s. I wish I could be less picky, but in mind, life is too short to eat bad food. Luckily for Austinites, we have some darn good pizza places around town. For the month of October and in honor of one of my favorite foods, I will be profiling some local Austin pizzas that rank as some of the best in my humble opinion. Please leave suggestions of places to try, but I am always on the hunt for the ultimate piece of pie! One of places in town that excels at pizza making is Enoteca on South Congress. Enoteca is the casual café to the conjoining Vespaio, which is probably the best Italian place in Austin. The menu at Enoteca features homemade pasta dishes, paninis, huge salads, and amazing pizzas. I love Enoteca because you can enjoy the quality food that has made Vespaio so acclaimed at a reasonable price and casual atmosphere. The café may be secondary compliment to Vespaio, but there is nothing inferior about the food served here. The pizza has a thin crusted, chewy crust and traditional Italian topping combinations. The red arrabbiatta sauce is so good it could easily stand alone on pasta. The salsiccia sausage pizza and the arrabbiatta and cheese are my favorites. If I had one complaint it would be the underbelly of the pizza needs to be either a little thicker or crispier to hold the toppings because it can be hard to eat without a fork and a knife. Still, this is quality pizza for a reasonable price. I recommend sitting outside on the patio with friends and enjoying  a little South Congress people watching in this perfect October weather.

Dish of the Day: Halloween Candy Season!

Happy October everyone! Although the warm weather, fun in the sun, and the bright color pallet my birthday month of April brings makes it my favorite, I love the month of October for a few reasons. Texas plays OU, Austin City Limits comes to town, its national pizza month, I get to see Maggie and my brother in NYC, and we finally get a welcome break from the Texas heat. And, of course, October is home to my favorite holiday, Halloween. Yes I know Halloween isn’t technically a holiday, but I love any day that calls for celebration involving . . . → Read More: Dish of the Day: Halloween Candy Season!
