Of course, it was only a matter of time before Austin, the trailer dining epicenter, got its very own frozen banana stand, Bananarchy. Normally I am not one for ‘kitschy’ trailers, but I am one for hilarious shows, so I am completely on board with the idea of a frozen banana stand. I also recently saw Michael Cera walking down South Congress, and I had a small slither of hope he may just be behind the glass, wearing a full banana suit, obviously. The way Bananarchy works is you first choose to go halfies or wholsies on a banana. Then pick a dip flavor from vanilla, chocolate or peanut butter and topping from selections like sprinkles, oreo and toffee. They also have a specialty menu as well, including the massively sized Gob (just don’t spill any on your $4000 suit). The outside dip shell holds up well and is a nice contrast to the soft banana texture inside. These are definitely rich treats, so a halfies is plenty for one person. I wouldn’t say this is a treat I would go for on a regular basis, but perfect when you are looking for a summertime dessert alternative to snowcones and ice cream. And you can pretend this dessert is healthy since there is a banana in the middle of it. By Ginny, on February 24th, 2011% Today’s drink of the day is a childhood throwback, the root beer float. While these days my youthful floats don’t generally make the recommend diet list, if I do give into the temptation, the best place to order this heavenly treat is Big Top Candy Shop on South Congress. The Shop is part candy store, part soda fountain where the soda jerks make the colas from scratch and top their floats with the real deal Blue Bell ice cream. Whether you are on the hunt for a forgotten favorite candy, squelching a chocolate craving or waiting for a table . . . → Read More: Drink of the Day: Big Top Candy Shop By Ginny, on January 25th, 2011% Considering I think a cheese plate is the best desert, I am not what one would call a sweet connoisseur, but every once in a while when my sweet tooth comes out from hibernation, one of my favorite desert havens is Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop on South First. One step inside the cute bakery and you are immediately hit with the smell of sugary goodness. The cupcakes are not only delicious, but they are feature creative combinations, usually inspired by a celebrity, and decorated in such a way they are (almost) too pretty to eat. The whimsical cupcakes don’t sacrifice taste for the design, either, since they are in fact, award winning. They took home ‘Best Overall Cupcake’ in last year’s Cupcake Smackdown. While known for their inventive cupcakes, Sugar Mama’s also is home to my dad’s favorite lemon bar. The little shop serves up cutely named cupcakes by the dozens; one morning I walked by and there was literally a line of people waiting for it to open. While they have a few standard every day flavors, most cupcake flavors change daily. I guess it’s a good thing they have a punch card!
