By Ginny, on January 31st, 2012% Valentine's Day 2012 Date or no date, I have never been one to get particularly jazzed up about Valentine’s Day after it no longer meant leaving school with a shoebox filled with candy. However, Foreign and Domestic’s four course dinner with wine pairings for $50/pp is enough to melt any cold dark heart. Foreign and Domestic isn’t the only spot gearing up for the big day; many of Austin’s finest restaurants will be hosting dinners worth getting struck by Cupid’s arrow to enjoy. First things first, be sure to call the Chocolate Strawberry Hotline at 512.553.5796 to reserve . . . → Read More: Valentine’s Day 2012 By Ginny, on February 15th, 2011% You know you are a foodie _____ (dork, loser, freak, insert your own) when you eat something so wonderful that a tear literally forms in your eye. My waiter, the kind, nonjudgmental soul he was, came by to ask how it was and remarked ‘I’ll give you moment,’ because he too knew a dish displaying such creativity, perfection, and knock you off your feet deliciousness doesn’t come around very often. Where did this lovely concoction come and what was it? Uchi’s bacon steakie, of course. Uchi is consistently regarded as one of the best restaurants in town, and every time I go I am always reminded of why has garnered the reputation it has. From above and beyond attentive service to sushi and sashimi cut and served so perfectly to crazy inventive dishes like the one mentioned above, Uchi always delivers. Because the consistently long waits (can you blame people!) and fancy price tag, Uchi is a special occasion place, and I can honestly say I have never had less than stellar of an experience when visiting. Generally, I stick to the raw selections but this visit I ventured out of the box and ordered a pork belly dish that was the best thing I have ever had at Uchi hands down. The funny thing about Uchi is when you ask people what type of food they serve, it is referred to as a sushi restaurant. But if that condors visions of multiple kinds or rolls only, think again. Sure they have California and spicy tuna rolls on the menu, but it is so much more than that. To be honest, the rolls are the least exciting thing on the menu (although still pretty darn exciting). Why get something you can have anywhere when you can try a perfectly seasoned, melt in your mouth fresh piece of fish you probably haven’t even heard of, ie, my Japanese Sun Beam with sea salt and lemon zest. Furthermore, if you stick to the basics you are going to miss the all-stars like the above mentioned bacon steakie, the maguro sashimi and goat cheese, the hama chili, and the rotating nightly specials. Whether you like sushi or not, there is something on the Uchi menu that will please even the most temperamental of diners. If you have never been, put it on the top of the list, and if you have, go back and be adventurous! The bacon steakie – $18. Pork belly that is slow cooked in some ridiculous fish caramel sauce, then fried and then served with flavorful, seasonal produce like peppers and watermelon. Sweet, spicy, tender on the inside, crispy on the outside, fresh, bright flavors….I can go on and on. ORDER THIS! You will thank me later! Continue reading Uchi
By Ginny, on February 11th, 2011% Sorry for my delayed V-day post, but if you are looking for some last minute places to go, here are a few to try this weekend and Monday. Don’t worry, if you have hated Valentine’s Day since you stopped getting shoeboxes of candy like in elementary school, there are a few events for you too! For all the lovers out there, some amazing things happening all over town!: If something sweet is what you are angling for either to celebrate the day or to counteract bitter V-day feelings, parkside has you covered with a 4-course dessert . . . → Read More: Valentine’s Day Special Edition By Ginny, on February 3rd, 2011% One of Austin’s most classic and longstanding fine dining establishments is Fonda San Miguel where the cuisine is focused on food from the seven distinct regions of Mexico. While Austin is home to many wonderful Mexican food restaurants spanning spectrum as far as cuisine and price points, Fonda San Miguel has long been referred to as the benchmark for the fine dining, authentic Mexican food experience in Austin. Beyond the wonderful food, Fonda San Miguel has placed a premium on cultivating an atmosphere filled with Mexican artwork and interior elements which only help to elevate the decadent experience. One knock on Fonda San Miguel has always been that the prices are higher than most other Mexican food restaurants around town, but for a special occasion it is worth it. There are certainly cheaper restaurants to get your Mexican food fix, but you will be hard pressed to find a similar experience, authenticity, quality, and service, and let’s face it, most other places are not serving you produce fresh from a sustainable garden outside either. I hear they have an incredible Sunday Brunch as well. In fact, if you are looking for a reason to go, the dreaded V-day is right around the corner. If you are going to go to a special dinner, why not go to one that gives back to the community also like Fonda San Miguel’s Valentine’s Night Dinner which donates a portion of the proceeds to Robin Shiver’s Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) Foundation. Pics from my most recent below where everything was even more delicious than it looks! Chili Asados con Rajas – $9.50. The tortillas are dangerously addicting – beware!
