Whip In

From the outset, Whip In may appear to be your average stop ‘n go shop alongside I-35 but take care in judging this book by its cover. The shop’s door adorned with the motto ‘Nameste Ya’ll’ should be the first indicator that looks can be deceiving as far as the Whip In is concerned. Those in need of a bit more convincing only need to take a look around the uniquely South Austin restaurant, bar, and retail mart. Known as a longstanding Travis Heights favorite, the Whip In offers a little something for everyone. Whether picking up a quick bottle of wine or meeting a friend for dinner, the Whip In has personally always been a favorite post work spot due to its casual convenience.

Chana Masala - $7

The Indian-influenced menu features a large assortment of sharing plates, specialty sandwiches, rice bowls, and daily specials create from locally sourced and organic ingredients. Each dish is generously portioned and well-priced. Personal favorites include chana masala rice bowl or seasonal ratatouille. Both dishes represent my ideal comfort food. They are rich in flavor and spice, but the use of better ingredients helps maintain a light, fresh balance. Try as I may, it is impossible to resist ordering a side of the Whip In’s traditional naan bread. Fluffy, soft, and full of delicious garlic flavor, it is worth the splurge every time.

Along with a large number of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, the Whip In also features over 60 beers on tap, including a solid local and regional selection. The Whip In recently reduced its retail space to make way for a wine bar and more interior dining options, but there is still a well maintained selection of wine, beer, and local pantry items. The inviting lounge area often has live music, but if it’s too crowded, there is ample dinner seating on the outdoor patio.
